Kelcroft Energy Experts Finds Air Conditioning Running Overnight click for larger image
Kelcroft's site monitoring revealed that the air conditioning,
intended to operate during the day was also cooling the
building at night, and at a lower temperature! The building
owner was stunned.
Operating the air conditioning system unnecessarily wastes
energy, and also causes a higher carbon footprint and higher
maintenance costs.
Instead of "OFF" it seems that a lower temperature
setpoint had been programmed for night time, and the
air conditioning systerm maintained 21 degC over
night.
The building owner said the AC systerm has been operated
in that condition for the last 10 years, nobody knew. And
it was solved with a few minutes re-programming.
John Herbert said "this type of finding is not unusual
in our energy audit work, the real estate space has
changed with buildings operated without supervision
nowadays, too often wasting energy.
He said "We had also discovered an office building
open 7am-7pm but the air-conditioning chiller plant
was running 24/7 for no good reason, wasting energy"
Except data centres where air conditioning is provided
to serve the equipment, the key point is understanding the
conditions within the occupied zone, where the people
are located, seems obvious right?

But often sensors are located at or near ceiling level,
or worse installed in bad locations influenced by local
heating from lighting fittings! so distorting the actual
room temperature and causing everyone to wear a coat
or scarf indoors.
