Carbon Neutral Events

What is a Carbon Neutral Event?

Conferences, symposiums, and events have as a natural result of their activities, burn energy and create extra waste, these in turn translate to additional GHG emission both directly and indirectly resulting from the event.

And lets not forget air travel, there is the potential carbon emission resulting from and overseas dignitaries, and delegates that attend.

therefore to lower the impact on the planet, a carbon neutral event is any event (conference, congress, symposium, summit, etc) where the carbon load (GHG) created as a result of the event is balanced by a credible carbon offset.

But first, before we starting trying to buy offsets, we must limit or minimize all the possible energy and environmental waste, that will reduce the quantity of the offset and hence the cost.

Conference and event organizers could potentially monetize the carbon load by offering delegates the opportunity to buy a delegates offset at the event.

Why chose a Carbon Neutral Event?

In the future more companies and organizations will be asking for the carbon load because as part of CSR and auditing, it will increasingly be needed for their inventory. Once firms realize the impact that conferences and events cause, that firm or management may restrict attendance, particularly for events that are not carbon neutral.

What does the future hold?

We can't predict the future, but we recognize the trend. What is clear is there is a Carbon accounting trend and it is changing. Once it was only countries and CDM projects, but the trend is heading towards the individual and buildings.

In Hong Kong 86% of all electricity generated is used in buildings, an obvious opportunity to lower pollution and carbon emissions. Another example, in 2008 Australia lawmakers are suggesting that individual buildings will cap and trade. It's about responsibility, community and local responsibility.
