Free Energy Saving Tips
Most organisations could cut their lighting and electrical bills
by up to fifteen percent (15%) without capital investment! some organisations
have saved more.
Some corporations such as BP (now renamed Beyond Petroleum) boast about their
energy saving efforts in their communications improving their corporate imagine.
For example, they
achieved an across the board ten percent reduction without expenditure!
As well as the general energy housekeeping advice herein, Kelcroft's
professional energy
audit helps you saving more money, call Kelcroft today for

Every watt counts
Don't over look the small improvements. In addition to lower bills, every watt (unit of electrical energy) saved, is equivalent to saving four watts at the power station. Energy conservation helps keep your money in your bank account, but also helps the environment by reducing pollution.
Top Ten Energy Conservation Tips
1. If you can't measure it, how can you manage it?
Regularly check and record on your consumption of electricity, gas
and oil. Don't forget Utility companies are not infallible.
And remember to check that your bills relate to what
you actually use rather than the estimated reading.
Incidentally, the fact that
HK-BEAM rewards a credit for energy sub-metering is
an indication of the importance of energy metering.
2. Switch off lights in empty rooms - sounds like commonsense
doesn't it? Turn off lights in unoccupied rooms and corridors - especially
at the end of the day. This can save up to ten percent (10%) of your energy bill.
3. Chose and use only the most energy efficient light fittings - they use
twenty percent (25%) less
power and last six times longer. Switching to the last technology
today will save the cost of the investment long before the old
lamps have expired - recoup the savings today. Lower frequency re-lamping means
your staff can be adding value with other tasks.
4. Use the light you need. Bright corridors and hallways? remove or switch off
alternate fittings.
5. Use daylight it's free - regularly clean your windows.
6. Clean light fittings regularly - accumulating dust and dirt reduces lighting levels
encouraging people to switch on more lights - keep them clean.
7. Too cold, set the room thermostat at 23°. Air-conditioning
consumes forty percent (40%) of buildings energy utilisation.
For example, every 1° decrease in room temperature, the energy cost
increases by approximately eight percent (8%).
8. If condensation is not a risk, don't cool unused space - empty
offices, storerooms, corridors, etc.
9. Check that your thermostats are property sited, out of draughts and
away from cold or hot spots. Consider installing remote sensing or wireless.
10. Keep equipment such as air conditioners and filters clean.
Dirt only reduces efficiency and output.
Bonus Tip
Top eleven tips didn't sound right, but this bonus tip is so important it can't
be missed - Lead by example
If management and senior managers are seen to ignore energy conservation, I
guarantee that your best efforts will fall short, because people follow visual
cues for seventy five of their information - we watch and learn.
Actively demonstrating energy conservation will do more to promote energy
conservation within your organisation than any memo will achieve.
HK-BEAM
If your more adventurous consider implementing HK-BEAM (Hong Kong Building
Environmental Assessment Method).
HK-BEAM is a voluntary initiative encouraging building owners to measure, improve and
label the environmental performance of new and existing buildings.
A HK-BEAM accreditation also helps your business or organisation making your brand distinctive
- Ensure you receive the recognition you deserve

Lighting Efficiency
Upgrading and improving the efficiency of lighting systems lowers your cost of doing business. Not only in your lighting cost reduced - there are 23 benefits to be gained including savings in air-conditioning plant size, and capacity, lower installation cost (CAPex), and lower operating cost (OPex) too.
Don't get left behind
If your competitors costs are lower, they are more profitable - have you been left behind? Lowering energy usage is a win-win scenario, you lower your operating costs increasing profitability and environmental pollution is reduced.
Ask any employee about a particular piece of equipment and often they will say "It is working fine" but is it efficient? Electric motors use 3/5 of the global electricity produced, and annual consumption is increasing every year - but it is efficient? In most cases no.
There is a very big difference between operating and efficient operation, take motors for example, it was discovered a pump motor operating 24/7 within a building operating 9-5, the motor was run overnight for no reason (energy audit case) - energy and electricity is often just overlooked and those lost dollars are gone forever.
